Community Projects
Zimbabwe

Sanyati Lodge
A number of community development projects are in hand at Sanyati Lodge, including:
  • To prevent over-fishing on Lake Kariba by the Dandawa villagers, the company is conducting a feasibility study into fish farming with a view to providing the village with another source of fish and income. Current netting techniques catch all species of fish and damage the aqua-habitat.

  • An educational support scheme is in operation in Dandawa village.

Crafts
The poor performance of the mass tourist sector has impacted on the rural crafts industry. The group is actively investigating setting up a cooperative in the Victoria Falls area, home to 2,000 carvers, to produce soap-stone and soft wood carvings for export.

Wheelchairs for the Disabled
The group is an active supporter of The Wheelchairs for the World Foundation headed by Ken Behring.

The group was selected by the Foundation to co-ordinate the distribution of wheelchairs in the Zimbabwe region, including transport and maintenance. All administrative costs are met by the group.

Working closely with aid organisations, charities and hospital rehabilitation departments, the group has distributed over 400 wheelchairs for the disabled in Zimbabwe.

SASU Clinic
The Seventh Avenue Surgical Unit (SASU) provides surgical, medical, maternity, casualty and X-Ray services to the community of Manicaland. The Clinic provides a vital alternative service to the Provincial hospital which suffers from overcrowding and understaffing.

Due to an increase in rent and escalation of operating costs, SASU has begun negotiations with the Eastern Highlands Trust to take over one of their buildings originally designed as a hospital. The move and establishment of the Clinic at a new site will ensure the future provision of its medical service to the people of Manicaland.

The group is a donor to the SASU appeal and a long-term supporter of the project.

Prince Edward School Music and Computer Centre
Founded in 1898, Prince Edward School is Harare's leading multi-racial secondary education establishment. The John Bredenkamp Music & Computer Centre houses a Music Auditorium, Music Practice Rooms, Music Classrooms, a Music & Computer Library, Computer Laboratories (C1-C4) and associated administrative facilities.
In 1998, HRH Prince Edward chaired the school's Centenary Appeal.
